Chapter 42

Thora

The elevator let out in a what was labeled as a utility closet inside of Union Station—the largest hub for transportation in the downtown core. I’d thought moving close to one-hundred Conduits through there would be difficult, but it was surprisingly easy to blend in with the crowds when we broke down into smaller groups. If there’s one thing I can say with certainty about the residents of Toronto, it’s that there are enough weirdos out there that we don’t immediately stick out, though I’m sure you could say the same about any major city.

Tamara hadn’t come alone, but even with her ambulance and the two unmarked trucks, it wasn’t enough to move all of us to what she called ‘The Nest’ in one trip. I stayed behind with Lenna and a handful of others, while Donovan, Wolf, and Chantria took Mags in the ambulance and a little over half of Otnorot’s survivors were moved in the transport trucks.

It’s been about two hours since the attack now and, despite everything, all I can think about is the hope that wherever we’re going has a shower. Riding in this cramped ambulance has me feeling even more dirty than I already was, and the stop and go traffic of the city is starting to make me feel nauseous.

I know the feeling, Connor says, and it’s the first real thing he’s said to me since the blackout. That’s probably one of the things I miss the most about not having a body. That and eating. I’m not hungry, but I’d kill for a good rabbit.

A small laugh escapes me, but I cover it with a cough. The look on Lenna’s face tells me she’s not buying it, though. Now isn’t the time to talk to her about Connor, but that’s definitely high up on the to-do list.

Rabbit? Really? That’s what you’re craving?

Hey, don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it. He sounds closer to his more cheerful self, and I’m thankful for it.

Chantria has a rabbit familiar.

Whoa, Thora. I’m not that desperate.

I laugh-cough again. That’s not what I meant. I’m just wondering why we didn’t see it at The Pyre. I hope he’s okay. Guess what she named it.

Because you made me read Watership Down, you think I’m an expert on rabbit names now? His tone is teasing, but there’s still an edge to it.

It’s not from a book, but you know it.

I give up. Tell me.

Hopkins.

There’s a moment where he’s silent and then my mind fills with his laughter. Oh, man. And Kieran knows? Well, that solves the mystery of the missing rabbit then.

If I could smack you, I would. He didn’t hurt it.

We’ll see about that. He’s joking, of course, but he’s not wrong to assume Kieran was less than thrilled by the name.

When the ambulance finally comes to a complete stop, I breathe a sigh of relief. “We’re here!” Tamara calls back to us, and although I don’t yet know where ‘here’ is, I’m grateful to have arrived. Tamara pushes open the ambulance doors and in front of us is the last building I would have expected to see.
